<p>Both La Banque Postale and Credit Mutuel shared a monopoly with the Savings Banks on distribution of Livret A. This is a savings account that the French government regulates, and which comes with a fixed 1% annual rate that is tax exempt.</p>
<p>Caisse d’Epargne once had the Livret A as their main resource, but they now also offer a host of life insurance and banking products.</p>

Both companies have solid traditions, with BNP starting operations in 1848, and the investment bank Paribas founded in 1872.</p>
